The 5 Things to Clean Up in Your Books Before December 31

Here are the five most important things to clean up in your books before the end of the year:

  1. Reconcile every bank, credit card, loan and payment processor account - your books must match reality before anything else can be trusted.

  2. Clear all uncategorized, suspense, and "Ask My Accountant" transactions - uncategorized transactions are the #1 cause of incorrect tax filings and inflated taxable income.

  3. Separate Owner transactions from Business transactions - Incorrect owner activity creates false expenses, false income, and messy equity accounts — all of which your CPA must fix later.

  4. Reconcile payroll, W-2, 1099, and contractor records - payroll errors cause IRS notices more than any other bookkeeping mistake.

  5. Verify all income and clean up expense categories - not every deposit is revenue. Income errors inflate your tax bill. Expense errors reduce your deductions.
